{"id":1313,"date":"2017-08-26T12:23:23","date_gmt":"2017-08-26T10:23:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/atarinside.dyndns.org\/blog\/?page_id=1313"},"modified":"2021-02-25T22:39:43","modified_gmt":"2021-02-25T21:39:43","slug":"tutorial-how-to-dump-an-old-atari-cassettetape-to-a-cas-or-wav-file","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.atarinside.com\/blog\/index.php\/tutorials\/tutorial-how-to-dump-an-old-atari-cassettetape-to-a-cas-or-wav-file\/","title":{"rendered":"Tutorial : How to dump an old Atari cassette\/tape to a CAS or WAV file"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hi @ll, this is my first tutorial, i hope you&#8217;ll find it usefull.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Required tools :<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A tape player<\/li>\n<li>A PC running windows \ud83d\ude42<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/audacity.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Audacity<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/a8cas.sourceforge.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A8CAS<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>1 &#8211;\u00a0First Steps<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Connect the headphone output to the microphone input of your PC.<\/li>\n<li>Keep away any source of\u00a0interferences such as your mobile phone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Place the cassette in the player but before recording it, it will be necessary to prepare the tape to have a\u00a0reading as smooth as possible.<br \/>\nWe have to avoid any offset between the tape and the reading head with three important steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Rewind the tape completely (rewind)<\/li>\n<li>Fast Forward to the end (fast forward)<\/li>\n<li>Rewind the cassette completely again (rewind)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>2 &#8211;\u00a0Recording<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Check your recording\/microphone volume (on your PC\/Windows) is set to 100% (default is 75%).<\/p>\n<p>Start recording in Audacity\u00a0until your reach the end of the tape.<\/p>\n<p>You may need to repeat this process several times by adjusting the output volume on your cassette\u00a0player to see a correct result.<\/p>\n<p>If\u00a0the sound is too loud, it won&#8217;t work :<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.atarinside.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Atari-Audacity-son-trop-fort.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1001\" height=\"239\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If the sound is too low or if your forgot the rewind\/fast-forward\/rewind steps, it won&#8217;t work either :<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.atarinside.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Atari-Audacity-probleme-dalignement.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"241\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If everything went fine you should have something similar to this :<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"border-width: 2px;\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.atarinside.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Atari-Audacity-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"999\" height=\"373\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Since you don&#8217;t have any music you can remove the left track (Audacity, audio track (on the left), track\/split) then remove the left track.<\/li>\n<li>Remove any blank audio at the end of the track (after the last carrier signal).<\/li>\n<li>Export the result as a 16 bits PCM Wav file (do not use the metadatas).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>3 convert the WAV file to CAS format<\/strong><\/span> (2 different ways : <strong>A<\/strong> &#8211; with\u00a0A8CAS or <strong>B<\/strong> &#8211; with\u00a0Altirra)<\/p>\n<p><strong>A &#8211; Using A8CAS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.atarinside.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/a8cas-1.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then check if you don&#8217;t have any &#8220;Attempting to recognize data block&#8230; failed&#8221; in the middle of the wav processing.<br \/>\nHaving one at the beginnning or at the end should not have any consequences.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>4 check the result<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open your <strong>CAS<\/strong> file into Altirra (File\/cassette\/load).<\/li>\n<li>Disable system\/acceleration\/C: patch (cassette SIO)<\/li>\n<li>Boot to Basic<\/li>\n<li>type CLOAD then Enter twice<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If everything is OK you should have a &#8220;READY&#8221; message, type RUN and enjoy your program.<\/p>\n<p><strong>B &#8211; It doesn&#8217;t work ? Try this workaround with Altirra :\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Disable system\/acceleration\/C: patch (cassette SIO)<\/li>\n<li>Open your <strong>WAV\u00a0<\/strong>file into Altirra (File\/cassette\/load).<\/li>\n<li>Boot to Basic<\/li>\n<li>type CLOAD then enter twice<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If everything is OK you should have a &#8220;READY&#8221; message, type RUN and enjoy your program.<\/p>\n<p>If you have an &#8220;Error 143&#8221; :<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.atarinside.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Altirra-error143.png\" width=\"400\" height=\"401\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Enable system\/acceleration\/C: patch (cassette SIO)<\/li>\n<li>Boot to Basic (System\/Cold reset) &#8211; This will also rewind your virtual tape.<\/li>\n<li>type CLOAD then enter twice :<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.atarinside.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Altirra-OK.png\" width=\"399\" height=\"399\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If everything is OK you should have a &#8220;READY&#8221; message, type RUN and enjoy your program.<\/p>\n<p>If not&#8230;adjust the sound volume a bit on your player (try more and\/or try less loudness) then&#8230;go back to step one.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Now your program is loaded but you still need to convert it to a CAS file :<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Create a new tape within Altirra :<\/li>\n<li>File\/Cassette\/New tape<\/li>\n<li>Disable system\/acceleration\/C: patch (cassette SIO) \u00a0&#8211; This step is\u00a0<strong>IMPORTANT. <\/strong>If you don&#8217;t do it, the result won&#8217;t be usable for other emulators and even with altirra itself if C: patch is not enabled.<\/li>\n<li>Open File\/Cassette\/Tape Control then press the record button (round dot on the right).<\/li>\n<li>Type CSAVE then Enter twice and wait until the &#8220;READY&#8221; message.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.atarinside.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Altirra-CSAVE.png\" width=\"400\" height=\"401\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now save your new tape as a <strong>CAS\u00a0<\/strong>File : File\/Cassette\/Save.<\/p>\n<p>Et voila ! You now have a working copy of your good old tape !<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.atarinside.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Altirra-running-cassette.png\" width=\"428\" height=\"297\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>One more thing : If the ATARI basic program is protected (ie you can&#8217;t LIST it or LIST gives you garbage or it&#8217;s erased from memory after a warm reboot) :<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1 &#8211; Cload it in Altirra<\/p>\n<p>2 &#8211; Press F8 to enter debug mode, open debug console (debug\/window\/console)<\/p>\n<p>3 &#8211;\u00a0Dump BASIC program line:<\/p>\n<p>.basic_dumpline -c 0<\/p>\n<p>4 &#8211; Rebuild BASIC variable name table:<\/p>\n<p>.basic_rebuildvnt<\/p>\n<p>5 &#8211; Save BASIC program<\/p>\n<p>.basic_save c:\\yourfile.bas<\/p>\n<p>Or just warm reset, then go to File\/Tape\/New tape\/Open casette Tape Control\/press record\/ Then use BASIC command Csave (Press enter twice).<\/p>\n<p>Enjoy !<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hi @ll, this is my first tutorial, i hope you&#8217;ll find it usefull.
